Building New Opportunities – Bishop Asili PS

In the heart of Lira, Uganda, a powerful story of resilience and hope is unfolding. The Missionary Sisters of Mary Mother of the Church are working tirelessly to create brighter futures through the development of the Bishop Ceasar Asili Primary School—a place where healing begins and dreams are reborn.

Founded in 2018, the school emerged from the shadows of nearly two decades of violence under Joseph Kony’s brutal insurgency. Families were torn apart, children were forced to flee their homes, and access to education and healthcare all but disappeared. Today, the Missionary Sisters of Mary and this school stands as a beacon of renewal for a community determined to rebuild.

Yet, the journey is far from over. While the school has opened its doors to eager young learners, its facilities remain limited and urgently in need of expansion. Together with the Sisters, we are striving to transform this campus into a thriving center of learning by:

  • Building additional classrooms to welcome more children
  • Providing safe water and improved sanitation for health and dignity
  • Introducing reliable electricity to power education and opportunity
  • Creating sports and play spaces where children can grow, heal, and thrive

Spread across a generous multi-acre campus in the rural part of the Lira Diocese, the school holds a unique and vital place in the region. It is the only Catholic school in the area—and the only one where children can learn in English, giving them access to broader opportunities for their future. Nearby government schools, though numerous, are often hindered by inconsistent teaching and instruction limited to the local vernacular, leaving many students without the tools they need to succeed in a wider world.

Today, Bishop Asili Primary School serves 154 students—both boarding and day scholars—each one carrying a story of courage and possibility. With continued support, this school can become far more than a place of learning; it can be a foundation for transformation, empowering a new generation to rise, rebuild, and lead.

Be Part of the Transformation

Together, we are working to raise $176,000 over the next two years to turn this vision into reality. Each project below represents a meaningful step toward dignity as children of God, safety, and enhanced educational opportunity for these children.

Restore Dignity for Girls$4,000 Needed

We are raising $7,000 to renovate the girls’ toilet facilities—an essential improvement for health, dignity, and daily life. Thanks to a generous gift of $3,000, we are already partway there.

Your support will help:

  • Replace and extend the roof to provide full coverage from rain
  • Improve lighting for safety and usability
  • Tile stalls for cleanliness and easier maintenance
  • Repair structural cracks and refresh the entire building
  • Ensure safe, sanitary, and welcoming facilities

Help us complete this project with the remaining $4,000. Give today!

Expand Learning Capacity$42,000

Today, Bishop Asili Primary School stands at a pivotal moment. With dormitory space for up to 600 students but classroom capacity for only 245, the opportunity to grow is clear—and urgent. Completing key projects, especially the nursery classroom building, will immediately allow the school to welcome 50+ additional students, move toward a sustainable enrollment of 300+, and lay the foundation for continued expansion in the years ahead.

The need for classroom space is urgent. We are seeking $42,000 to complete a two-classroom nursery building with office space for teachers and play area for the small children. This investment will:

  • Double the number of nursery students served
  • Free up space for additional primary students
  • Create a new sand play area for nursery students
  • Enable enrollment of 50+ more children
  • Strengthen the school’s long-term sustainability

Your support opens the doors of education to even more children eager to learn. Give Today!

Build Safe and Reliable Facilities for Boys – $16,000

The current boys’ toilets are no longer structurally sound and cannot be safely repaired. We are seeking $16,000 to construct a completely new facility in a better location.

This project will:

  • Provide safe, stable sanitation infrastructure
  • Replace worn and unsafe structures
  • Improve hygiene and daily living conditions

Your gift will help create a healthier, safer environment for every boy at the school. Donate Today!

Provide Accessible, Covered Showers – $60,000

Right now, students must walk across campus to use outdoor showers that lack cover, light, and privacy. Rain and darkness often make them unusable.

We are raising $60,000 to build shower additions onto all four dormitories, giving students direct and safe access.

This will provide:

  • Covered, indoor well-lit shower areas
  • More stalls for improved access
  • Indoor running water, including warm water
  • Safety and privacy for all students

Help ensure every child has a safe and dignified place to bathe. Donate now!

Support the Sisters and School Community – $22,000

The Missionary Sisters who serve this school also need safe, functional living conditions. We are seeking $22,000 to complete their community house.

This includes:

  • Installation of a septic system
  • Indoor plumbing for showers, toilets, and sinks
  • A proper restroom for teachers and visitors

Your gift supports those who dedicate their lives to serving these children. Give Today!

Secure Reliable Water Access – $12,000

Water is essential to every aspect of daily life. We are raising $12,000 to install a rainwater harvesting system with four 10,000-liter tanks.

This system will:

  • Provide consistent water during dry seasons
  • Support student and staff needs
  • Enable farming, livestock care, and sustainability efforts
  • Reduce strain on existing water sources

Help bring life-giving water to this growing community. Give Today!

Power the Future – $15,000

Reliable electricity will transform how this school operates. We are raising $15,000 for solar power and a small set of computers for teachers and administration.

This will:

  • Provide consistent, renewable energy
  • Improve administrative efficiency
  • Equip teachers with essential tools
  • Open new pathways for learning

New Year, New Hope with Catholic Education

As we begin a new calendar year, Uganda also begins a new academic year. Following the election violence and the eroding economy families continue to struggle and suffer greatly. Children then miss out on education and the pit of poverty deepens. You contributions help transform difficult situations into new avenues of hope for these families. Would you consider support a student for one year or even one term?

We collaborate with four partner schools and organizations in Uganda to ensure children are able to access quality Catholic Education. We are super excited about launching our new partnership with the Missionary Sister of Mary, Mother of the Church and Bishop Caesar Asili Primary School (photos above) located in the Lira Diocese (central). Lira is one of the poorest dioceses in the country due to nearly two decades of conflict driven by Kony’s Lords Resistance Army. YOUFRA Lira is partnering with the school to support 12 primary students whose parents are small holder farmers in their agricultural program. The cost per student is $150 per term and $450 for the year, which covers studying and boarding. Will you sponsor a primary student today? Donate Today!

Our partner Ocer Campion Jesuit College in Gulu Diocese (north) has 1,000 plus student with one in four students on scholarship (photos below). St Joseph College, a Franciscan high school in Tororo Diocese (east) has 150 students with nearly half of the students full scholarship. (photos above.) Most of the parents are farmers struggling to eke out a livelihood. Without your generous support these youth would be growing up without an education. Catholic education is key to helping children become fully who God desires them to be! OCJC’s motto is beyond academic excellence. For only $50 per month, or $200 per term, or $600 for the year you can help one high school student to keep learning and striving for his or her dreams. Graduating from a Catholic school experience is transformative in their lives and has a ripple effect across their families for generations to come. Collectively we help bring a brighter and more faith filled future to all of Uganda. Will you help one high school student reach their dreams? Give Today!

We are sponsoring Sr. Jackline of the Little Sisters of St Francis to complete her bachelors in education which will enable her to join St Joseph’s College as a social studies teacher. We are supporting Deputy Head Teacher Simon Peter Omollo to complete a MA in Education Leadership & Management. This will qualify him to become Head Teacher for the College one day soon. University costs on average $1,000 per term. Will you help the Little Sisters build their skills? Give Today!

Along with YOUFRA Uganda in Lira & Soroti we are helping young girls whose educational journey were disrupted by an unplanned pregnancy. After the children are born and reach 6-12 months we sponsor the girls to learn vocational skills such as sewing or catering. This will enable them to find employment or build their own business and earn enough to support themselves and the child. Counseling is also provide to the young mothers along the way. Courses last 6 months to 2 years, costing between $600-$2400. Once graduated they receive a sewing machine or similar. Would you help a young mother learn a vocational skill? Donate Today!
